Ontmoeting met / meeting with Martin Macik Jr.

Toen we via Whatsapp contact hadden met Martin Macik Jr, bleek dat hij bij de start van de Breslau aanwezig zou zijn. Hij stelde zelf voor af te spreken en daar gingen we natuurlijk graag op in.

Kijk, in Nederland hebben we De Rooy, in de  Tsjechische Republiek Loprais en de afgelopen jaren zijn het daar vooral vader en zoon Macik die aanjagers waren en zijn van de rallytruck sport.

Vader Martin heeft vele Dakar rally’s in een Liaz gereden en gebruikt nu zijn 20 jaren ervaring in het ontwikkelen van de huidige Iveco rallytrucks. Zoon junior heeft geruisloos het stokje overgenomen in de truck en is al jaren een uitdager van de Kamaz rijders in de Dakar rally. In 2021 werd hij de “best of the rest” en dit jaar wist hij, ondanks technische tegenslag in het tweede deel van de rally op te schuiven naar de 7e plek in het eindklassement.

Sinds enkele jaren bouwt MM Technology ook trucks voor “klantenteams”. De bewezen kwaliteit en competitieve mogelijkheden van deze Tsjechische Iveco’s zorgen ook voor veel belangstelling uit Nederland. Kees Koolen had vorig jaar de primeur en dit jaar volgt in ieder geval Richard de Groot met zijn Firemen Dakarteam.

Op de maandagochtend van de Breslau Rallye spraken we met deze super sympathieke workaholic die hier in het bivak is om het Ruhrtal Racing team te begeleiden in hun eerste kilometers in een Macik truck. Relaxed gezeten op een treeplank van de MM Technology servicetruck, verteld hij passievol over het team, de ontwikkelingen in en rond het team. Zijn vader staat er naast en is het eerste deel ook gesprekspartner. Geweldig om deze legendarische LIAZ rijder en technisch brein achter de huidige Macik trucks in levende lijve te ontmoeten. Junior is de topsporter, marketeer, fotograaf en top ambassadeur van het rallyrijden met trucks.

Hij is geïnteresseerd in ons verhaal. Nog voor we zelf aan vragen toekomen, wil hij weten van ons hoe, wat, wanneer en waarom. In de antwoorden valt, als vanzelfsprekend, de naam Jan de Rooy. De Macik’s vroegen zich af hoe oud deze nestor van de Dakar (truck)rallysport is en hoe het met hem gaat. Nu weten wij daar niet alles van, maar wel dat hij volgend jaar 80 hoopt te worden en nog altijd dagelijks voor het transportbedrijf aan het werk is. Met een bewonderende blik wordt gereageerd.

Dan het verhaal van MM Technology. Een bedrijf dat drijft op pure passie voor de truckrallysport. Er is in de voorbije 20 tal jaren voor miljoenen geïnvesteerd om te komen waar het team nu is. Van het vele natte vinger werk van voorheen worden de trucks nu van te voren in 3D computermodellen ontworpen en doorontwikkeld. Aanpassingen worden vervolgens in de praktijk getest. Vanaf het moment dat Junior zich zo’n vijf jaar geleden meldde in de top van het Dakarklassement is er ontzettend veel gebeurd. Er kwam door de goede prestaties interesse voor de gebruikte techniek en dat mondde uit in een constructie waarin trucks worden doorverkocht met begeleiding en technische service. Het is de bedoeling dat de trucks in de rally’s serieus samenwerken. Zo ontstaat er een Macik collectief van zelfstandige rallyteams.

Ondertussen heeft Martin Macik Junior de ambitie om de Dakar als coureur te winnen. Hij leeft als topsporter en heeft geen angst voor de Kamaz rijders. Het fysieke en mentale in combinatie met talent en natuurlijk een geweldig geconstrueerde rallytruck moet de ideale mix zijn om die ambitie waar gaan maken. Verder lijkt dat in handen te zijn van het lot.

Hij geeft aan een workaholic te zijn. Dat moet bijna wel als je kijkt hoe actief hij is op meerdere vlakken. Naast zijn bestaan als atleet organiseert hij met MM Productions diverse evenementen, verzorgd hij met MM Photography beeldverslag bij evenementen en is hij bezig met diverse marketing en e-commerce activiteiten. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is runt hij ook de luxe koffiezaak PilotCafe in Praag. Daar zit hij graag te werken of komt er tot rust, genietend van een kwaliteits koffie en aanverwante smikkelarij. We vergeten bijna te melden dat hij ook nog een gezinsleven heeft met vrouw en twee jonge dochters. En dat ook nog tijd hebben om de Rallytrucksmannetjes te woord te staan…. Maar hoe dan?

Als we met Macik junior een blik op de toekomst werpen, dan krijgen we het ook over Kees Koolen en zijn ambitie in 2030 emissievrij in een truck de Dakar te rijden. MM Technology werkt op dit moment aan een door elektro motoren aangedreven rallytruck die hopelijk komende Dakar al kan deelnemen. Het zijn tussenstappen richting een toekomst van emissieloos rijden. Voorlopig blijft de verbrandingsmotor nog de standaard. Zijn nieuwe truck is in aanbouw en krijgt als vanzelfsprekend weer updates mee ten opzichte van de aan Ruhrtal Racing verkochte ‘Charles’. Een verkoop die met pijn in het hart gedaan is. Sinds MM Technology namen aan de trucks is gaan geven, heeft de Macik Jr. er gek genoeg een andere band mee gekregen. Drie jaar lang heeft hij er de Dakar mee uitgereden en samen veel beleefd. Zo’n truck verkopen gaat dan toch met enig sentiment gepaard.

MM Technology groeit door alle ontwikkelingen uit haar jasje en is bezig met een nieuw pand. Macik laat verder weten dat er meer staat te gebeuren waarover hij ons in dit stadium nog niks kon vertellen. Wel uitte hij zijn zorgen over lange levertijden en de stijgende prijzen. Dat drijft ook de prijs van hun trucks enorm op. We leven wat dat betreft in rare tijden.

We praten al een tijdje met elkaar en het gesprek ging nog een tijdje geanimeerd door. Een pracht ontmoeting met een bevlogen workaholic en uithangbord voor onze geliefde sport. Op dit moment staat met de Baja Aragon de volgende rally al weer voor de deur, waar hij onder andere met diverse Nederlandse Iveco’s de strijd aan zal gaan. Wij wensen alle Iveco teams heel veel succes!

Meeting with Martin Macik Jr.
When we first came into contact with Martin Macik Jr., discovered that he would be present at the start of the Breslau Rally. He offered to meet up with us, which we happily accepted.

Look, here in the Netherlands we have De Rooy, in the Czech Republic there is Loprais. In the last couple of years for the Czech it has been father and son Macik, that were the driving force (pun intended) behind the rally truck sport.

Father Martin competed in many rallies with his Liaz and now uses his 20 years of experience for the development of the current Iveco rally trucks. Son Junior has seamlessly taken over the baton within the rally sport and has been challenging the Kamaz drivers in the Dakar Rally for years. In 2021, he was “best of the rest” and this year he, despite technical difficulties, succeeded in claiming 7th place in the final classifications during the second part of the rally.

For some years now, MM Technology has been building trucks for “customer teams” as well. The tried and tested quality and competitive possibilities of these Czech Ivecos have also started to garner a lot of attention from the Netherlands. Kees Koolen got hold of the first one last year and this year Richard de Groot with his company team will follow.

On the monday morning of the Breslau Rallye, we had a chat with this very pleasant workaholic, who is staying in the bivak to mentor the Ruhrtal Racing team during their first kilometers in a Macik truck. Relaxing on a running board of the MM Technology service truck he passionately tells us all about the team and the newest developments around it. His father stands next to him and jumps in from time to time. It’s brilliant to meat these two legendary LIAZ drivers and the technical mastermind behind their current Macik trucks in person. Junior is the top athlete, marketer, photographer and top ambassador of the truck rally sport.

He is interested in our story. Before we even get started, he wants to know how, what, when and why. In our answers, of course, the name De Rooy makes an appearance. The Maciks want to know how old this Nestor of the rally truck sport is and how he is doing. Now, we don’t know everything about that, but we do know that he is hoping to celebrate his 80th birthday next year and that he still works daily for his transport company. Admiring looks are exchanged.

On to the story of MM Technology; a company that runs on pure passion for the rally truck sport. There have been investments in the millions to get the team where it is now. The trucks are now pre-designed and further developed in 3D computer models, a far cry from the busy work of the past. Adjustments are then real life tested. A lot has happened since Junior clocked in at the top of the Dakar classifications five years ago. Following his success, there was a lot of interest in the technology he used, which led to a new sales model in which the trucks are sold accompanied by mentoring and technical service. The goal is good cooperation between those trucks within a rally. That’s how the Macik collective of independent rally teams was born.

Meanwhile, Martin Macik Junior’s ambition is to win the Dakar Rally as driver. He lives like a top athlete and isn’t afraid of the Kamaz drivers. The physical and mental aspect in combination with talent and – of course – a brilliantly constructed rally truck, has to be the perfect blend, to make this ambition come true. The rest seems to be in the hands of fate.

He admits to being a workaholic. He almost has to be if you look at how active he is in a variety of different areas. In addition to being an athlete, he helps organize various events with MM Productions, provides photo reports of events and busies himself with diverse marketing and e-commerce activities. As if that’s not enough, he also runs the luxury coffee shop PilotCafe in Prague. He likes to work and/or relax there, enjoying a quality coffee and related delicacies.
Oh, we almost forgot to mention his family life with his wife and two young daughters. And then he takes the time to answer the questions of two Rallytruck guys…. How does he do it?

When we take a moment to look at the future with Macik Junior, we hear about Kees Koolen and his ambition to drive a zero-emission truck in the 2030 Dakar Rally. MM Technology is currently working on a rally truck driven by an electric motor, that hopefully will be able to compete in the upcoming Dakar Rally. These are the intermediate steps towards a future of zero-emission driving. For now, the combustion engine is still the standard. His new truck is under construction and will of course have a few upgrades in comparison to the truck “Charles”, sold to Ruhrtal Racing. A sale that was made with a heavy heart. Ever since MM Technology started naming their trucks, Macik Jr., strangely enough, started connecting with them differently. For three years he finishes the Dakar Rally with it, living through quite a few adventures together. Selling a truck like that naturally triggers a certain amount of sentiment in a person.

Following all the new developments, MM Technology is getting too big for its current location and is busy acquiring a new building. Macik also hints at more changes happening in the future, which he can’t talk about yet. He did however voice his concerns about longer delivery times and climbing prices, which impacts the prices of their trucks as well. We are living in interesting times in that regard.

We’ve been talking for some time now, and the conversation kept flowing for quite a while longer. A wonderful encounter with an inspiring person and integral part of our beloved sport. At the moment, the next rally with the Baja Aragon is just around the corner, where he will compete with various Dutch Ivecos, among others. We wish all the Iveco teams the best of luck!
